Your birdbath must be cleaned regularly otherwise harmful bacteria would start growing, causing threat to all the birds you are expecting to amuse and attract. Birdbaths become dirty rapidly, thus will invite the bacteria and the pests and will be requiring a detailed cleaning. Thus the best possible remedy for a clean and untainted birdbath is its routine maintenance and proper care.
Firstly the birdbath should be scrubbed down thoroughly, then the old water should be removed and even the debris should be cleared with the water hose which is usually placed on “jet”.
For cleaning 1 cup oxygen bleach and 1 gallon cold water should be mixed, oxygen bleach is used for disinfecting the birdbath avoiding the use of toxic chemicals which may harm the wildlife.
A scrubbing brush is dipped in the mixture and scrubbed inside the birdbath’s basin, the lip and other portions where the birds settle vigorously. The birdbath is then rinsed carefully and then refilled with fresh and cool water.
On cleaning the birdbath the quantity of pests around it get reduced and will restrict the growth of grime. Besides if an enzyme is added to the birdbath’s water, even the algae’s growth, the mosquito larva growing in the water, their amount would be reduced. This enzyme could be purchased online or from garden centers.
The birdbath should be placed in some shady position, as direct sunlight propagates algae’s growth more. The birdbath should be kept away from the bird feeders, as while they are being fed they will spill plenty of seeds below the feeders, and the seeds would choke up the birdbath.
Chlorine bleach can even be used for disinfecting the birdbath, diluting in the ratio one part of bleach and nine parts of water. But natural and organic products like borax, or baking soda, or the oxygen bleach should be used, as they are harmless to birds.
